Kanata is one of the largest suburbs in the Ottawa area and is a massive hub of innovative tech companies. Of course, that may not be surprising at all, especially if you live in the area. However, here’s something that just might shock you a little: did you know that north Kanata hosts the biggest technology park in Canada?

Yes, even bigger than Toronto. When the flying cars finally arrive, you’ll see them first in Kanata!

The innovation, exciting activities and outstanding career opportunities make this west Ottawa suburb one of the fastest-growing communities in the province. What are some other surprising facts about Kanata that you just have to know about?

Kanata Is Community By Definition

The word “Kanata” derives from the Huron Iroquois term that means “village.” And even though the population has surpassed 90,000, it holds to its values of close-knit communities. Young or old, you can always find a supportive network of friends to spend time with and explore new hobbies.

Kanata Offers Endless Outdoor Recreational Activities

Kanata may be known for its tech, but it’s also a perfect spot to enjoy outdoor recreation. There are over 100 recreational parks and three major golf courses. On hot days, you can take your choice of outdoor swimming pools to cool off, including Beaverbrook, Katimavik, or Glen Cairn. Do you prefer the beach instead? Crystal Beach and Brittania Beach are both a short drive away.

You’ll find avid cyclists and hikers out on the trails all year long, even on the coldest winter days. Beaverpond, Old Quarry Trail and the South March Highlands Conservation Forest are beautiful during any season and a great way to spend time communing with nature.

When it comes to winter fun, no one hibernates in Kanata. Not when there are so many fun activities to enjoy! Join the Kanata Nordic Ski Club for cross country skiing or snowshoeing through the beautiful Ottawa West Winter Trail.

Skiing isn’t the only way to get your heart pumping in the wintertime. Why not spend an afternoon ice skating at one of the many outdoor rinks or on the Ottawa Rideau Canal? If you prefer shoes to skates or skis, our beautiful hiking trails are open year-round. There are few scenes more peaceful than a frozen landscape covered in pristine snow!

Kanata Values Education Above All

A city doesn’t become a major tech hub without emphasizing education, and Kanata has some of the highest-rated schools in Ottawa. There are nearly 30 elementary schools and seven secondary schools, both in English and French.

Notable accolades go to Earl of March Secondary for its 8.6 Fraser ranking, which places it number 21 out of 739 schools in the entire province.

Kanata Is Crazy For Sports

The Ottawa Senators may have put us on the map, but Kanata residents are passionate about sports of all kinds, especially hockey. The Bell Sensplex offers year-round hockey training programs to people of all ages and abilities and hosts frequent tournaments.

There is more to life than hockey, of course. There is also football.

When our team, the Kanata Knights, takes on their rivals, the Bell Warriors and West Carleton Wolverines, you may hear the cheering crowd all the way from Ottawa!

If hockey and football don’t give you enough excitement, how about soccer? The West Ottawa Soccer Club is the largest sports club in Kanata with nearly 4500 members and hosts training and tournaments every spring and summer.

We are also home to one of the longest established gymnastics clubs in Canada, established in 1975. The Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club helps participants develop strength, coordination, flexibility and artistry. Programs are available for anyone from age four to adults. First stop, Kanata, then the Olympics!
