An important part of planning a fall hike is to choose the trail for your adventure. Unless you have a long weekend or some vacation time to spend on out of town on multi-day hiking trips, finding a local trail is your best bet. Not only does Ottawa have many local trails at various difficulty levels available for hiking, but many of them can also be the perfect spot for a day-trip, some with historical elements that could prove educational for people of all ages looking to discover and learn about the city. Bring Your Own Maps 

It’s great to have a map to help you navigate a trail and to discover any areas that could have otherwise been missed, but planning ahead to bring your own copy of the map can be a smart decision for more than one reason this year. By downloading a digital copy of the map before venturing out for your hike, you are prepared and won’t have to rely on poor signals once you are deep in any trail. Not only is a digital copy of the map more environmentally conscious, but it may also come in handy as many businesses are opting for digital downloads rather than handing out paper pamphlets to help stop the spread of COVID-19. So make sure you pack a battery pack or make sure you are on a full-charge before setting out on your trip!

 

Safety, Food, and Water

During any hike, it is important to always have your safety at the top of your mind; Without planning ahead and being mindful of your surroundings, you could get hurt even on the easiest of hiking trails. During the fall, many hunters take up forested areas once the season opens up. If the trail you are hiking on is also used as open hunting grounds, taking extra precaution by wearing a bright orange vest or other noticeable clothing is necessary to distinguish yourself in forested areas.
