It is a widely known fact that Military Relocation is something that happens frequently. In fact, members of the Canadian Armed Forces are transferred three times more often throughout their careers than other Canadian residents. Moving from city to city, or cross-country can be hard on everyone involved, even when the move is planned and welcomed. For our CAF members who are subjected to relocation more frequently, the added stress and responsibility can make things more difficult for them and their families.

Fortunately, the Canadian Armed Forces are dedicated to making the process easier, with more user-friendly programs and resources to assist along the way.

Relocation Programs

The CAF has modernized the applications and delivery of its relocation program. Today, CAF members have unlimited access to information provided to them through an online application. This app provides members with the essential relocation information needed, all in one spot, to assist in making their move as smooth as possible.

BGRS is the operating company of Brookfield Residential Property Services and is the choice contractor for the Federal Government Integrated Relocation Program (IRP). BGRS assigns the member a mobility consultant who is tasked with the relocation lifecycle for the member, beginning to end. This means, from pre-assessment through to the sale of the home and finding proper supports, BGRS will be working with the CAF member to ensure the move is easy and efficient. BGRS will direct the members to an online portal to help manage their relocation.

Policies

The Canadian Armed Forces have its set of policies and guidelines outlined and easily accessible in PDF Format for its members to view at their leisure. These policies are put in place to relocate the CAF member with minimal detriment to the member, their spouse (if applicable), and any dependents they may have. The policy also provides information on spending accounts available to the member to cover the cost of relocation, along with other benefits including house hunting trips, lodging and meal expenses, and in some circumstances financial assistance for the cost of education for the member’s dependents. It is essential throughout this process to know of all of the benefits you are entitled to in order to minimize any extra stress during your move.

In terms of buying and selling your residence for relocation purposes, the CAF has policies and limitations to respect when assisting the member through the process. This covers a variety of situations including shared ownership of a home, income properties, lot sizes, dual residences, and more.
